Apples assault on the smart home Does HomeKit have what it takes to win the market
Apples assault on the smart home Does HomeKit have what it takes to win the market
With the first devices that work with Apples HomeKit now hitting the market, can Apple dominate the smart home as it did the smartphone?

Along with HealthKit, one of the marquee features announced with the launch of iOS 8 was Apples HomeKit, a home automation framework designed to get separate smart home devices talking to each other, all controlled centrally by a iPhone or iPad.
With the home automation market set to be worth $71bn by 2018, according to Juniper Research, its no surprise that Apple is interested in staking its claim to the smart home in the same way it has the smartphone.
But for a long time after HomeKit launched, there was little sign of an ecosystem building around it or high profile supporters. There were also rumours of delays to its release, and speculation that a new Apple TV would be launched to double as a HomeKit hub, suggesting home automation might be anything but a home run for Apple.
Now, however, the first wave of HomeKit hardware products by third-party manufacturers are beginning to hit the shelves: the last couple of weeks have seen Philips launch its HomeKit Hue Bridge for controlling home lighting, while August has unveiled a HomeKit-connected door lock. These products join a handful of others from companies including Ecobee, Honeywell, Incipio, Insteon, and Lutron.
With partners taking care of the hardware, Apple recently tackled the software side of HomeKit, giving it a few more useful features in iOS 9: a more user-friendly set-up procedure, for example, and the introductions of scenes, where devices can be activated together - opening the garage door and turning on the front porch light at the same time, say. Its also brought HomeKit-compatibility with the latest WatchOS update, so you can control your home from your wrist.
With the software in place and hardware now trickling out, are we seeing the first coming of HomeKit - or a platform thats yet to, and may never, catch on?
NextMarket Insights is predicting the former, with 180 million HomeKit devices shipped by 2020. "Apples track record of creating excitement for nascent markets is unparalleled," Michael Wolf, the companys chief analyst, wrote in a recent blog. "HomeKit will create awareness about the smart home among average consumers and will accelerate development in the category among home system, appliance, and service providers."
But, as Wolf highlights, the smart home is an area rich with competition: Googles Brillo, Nests Weave, and Samsungs SmartThings are just three of the high-profile efforts by tech companies to make their own ecosystems the heart of the smart home.
For Ecobee, whose smart thermostat is HomeKit-compatible, when deciding which software partners to work with, the size of the potential ecosystem is a key factor.
"The phone you have in your pocket will be key to the connected devices you end up buying," Ecobee CEO Stuart Lombard told ZDNet. "As a manufacturer, theres lots of opportunity to be a part of many ecosystems. We want to focus on the ecosystem that really resonates with the consumer. The Apple installed base, the brand, and its gravitational pull are really important."
Joe Dada, CEO of Insteon, which makes a HomeKit-enabled device hub, agrees. "In the end, it comes down to simple math - do we think theyre going to get significant penetration? Just being a big player doesnt guarantee anything, and a lot of efforts into this space have failed. We have to read the minds of the leaders inside these organisations and try to get a feeling for where theyre going to go with this. Is this going to be a serious initiative theyre going to stick with, or is there a chance theyre not going to be serious about it?... Theres a difference between [companies taking] a leadership role and we dont want to be left behind."
Apple, the companies believe, is indeed serious about the industry, and the demography overlap between smart home enthusiasts and Apple users is clear: both are characterised by tech-savvy consumers with a higher than average income.
But while consumers may be happy to tie themselves into a single ecosystem with their smartphone, the decision to do the same with their home is more problematic - there could be a mixture of mobile operating systems running under a single roof, potentially leading to all sorts of compatibility problems. For those opting for a particular ecosystem, be it Apple or anything else, they need to make sure that framework not only works with their own, and their partners and familys, smartphone operating system, but that its also compatible with all the other home automation gear they already have.
And with Apple yet to release its own HomeKit app (though a trademark for an app called Home may suggest one is on the way), that leaves consumers having to deal with various third-party apps with differing set-up processes and attitudes to managing other players HomeKit hardware.
For buyers, it may seem like smart home is still in the Wild West phase, with both consumers and manufacturers waiting to see who wins the 20-man bar fight. For now, hardware makers are hoping to keep everyone happy by working with multiple partners: Philips Hue bulbs work with the Hue Android app as well as its HomeKit-enabled Bridge, while the majority of Insteons many hardware devices can be managed by their respective Apple, Android, and Windows Phone apps.
"We think it will be one size fits all. If you have to figure out which ecosystem works with what, and that [hardware] doesnt work with this [ecosystem] but it does with that, then thats not a great customer experience," Ecobees Lombard said.
For Insteons Dada, "consumers will rule the day" - companies that offer the sorts of compatibility that buyers want, whatever those may be, "consumers will reward them with purchases".
As it does with iOS apps looking to get onto the App Store, Apple has to certify all the hardware that wants to offer itself as HomeKit-compatible. The smartphone world may give us some indication as to whether Apples more closed approach will prove popular with consumers. Look at it one way, and there are hundreds of millions of iPhone users happy with Apples somewhat walled garden. Look at it the other way, and there are hundreds of millions more who prefer Androids arguably more open attitude.
Theres no doubt that Apple will end up with a sizeable part of the smart home market but, as with mobile, its unlikely to be the most popular player.
As NextMarket Insights Wolf sums it up: "While HomeKit will certainly see traction, its ability to coalesce consumers and product manufacturers around a single unifying effort faces an uphill battle. Competing offerings from Google with Weave, Samsungs SmartThings, and industry-driven efforts such as AllSeen and UPnP are also jockeying to establish themselves with manufacturers and consumers alike. While HomeKit could soon be one of the leading platforms in smart home, it will by no means be the only platform."

7 Steps on How to Improve The Corrupt Hard Disk unreadable
7 Steps on How to Improve The Corrupt Hard Disk unreadable
7 Steps on How to Improve The Corrupt Hard Disk unreadable
Hard drive can not be read or corrupted? We will discuss how to improve or at least save the data stored in it. As one part of the computer, the hard disk is a bit higher, but the content is actually more expensive again. Can cause heartburn and stomach-cenut if cenut head up important data in it is lost. Hard drive is the place where all data, including the Operating System (OS), program files, all files and folders that you have created and saved for wear. If then as an unpredictable sometimes cause they all disappeared? Wadew! If lost or damaged OS reinstall just live. If the film or music collection lost, can download or ask your friends who have. Lha if file employment or work wesh .... like for example a poem or short story missing? Disaster really. Photographs or highly imagepenting? Photos can plant, but the atmosphere and memories huh difference, hehe ... Ok, more, now how to improve and save data on hard disk corrupted or illegible? Usually we have to know if your laptop or PCs hard disk we problematic when we try to open the drive or partition. If the destruction was severe, so the entire hard disk can not be read in total. Sometimes, borne Windows disk checking utility also unable to read the hard disk is damaged. Hmmm, have to get ya spare hard disk. To read and save data corrupted hard disk that we can adopt disk recovery utility, if still failed so had to dech, we bring a laptop or PC to the store for the service. That means we really should pay, and the sad, when they fail, we do not really know what happened, do not know how they are, do not know what theyre merecovery data, and so on. What the hell is true we can not own, most do not know what and how the data recovery process? Mau? Ok, in many cases, as the hard disk can not be read at all, the possibility is definitely our biggest need spare hard disk. Not always do. But if you have the bad sectors, then just throw away the hard disk. Bailouts data below may not save your hard disk, but most do not we try to make it read only once so we can take the data stored. Ways to save data on the hard disk is damaged Previously, to know, you should connect the external hard disk drive into a normal PC, and try to follow the following steps are rare:

- If the dialog box appears indicating that you must be formatted drive, click "No", this is very crucial, if you stuck up click "Yes", then youre done. Will be hard again, and even if successful, will be a lot of failed or corrupted data.
- Click Start, select My Computer or the Computer. will emerge from the hard disk drive you just colokkan earlier. Right-click on the drive you, select Properties. If it turns out they are illegible or hard disk of yours appeared, skip to step 5.
- Well, the window will appear that displays the property. Click on the tab Tools
- Select Check Now under Error Checking to start doing the inspection error on the hard disk of yours. Check the pop-up window containing a question whether you want Windows to correct errors found. Check the boxes also contain a Scan for and attempt recovery of bad Sectors. Click Start. If then Windows told that the hard disk is not readable and should be in the format, click No.
- If these steps fail as well, now we wear the command prompt. Click Start >> Run >> CMD or just type in CMD after clicking Start.
- Will emerge from the Command Prompt window like this: imageJadi inget-time junior inget DOS lesson first yes. Now type the name of the damaged drive us earlier by adding a colon. So for example a faulty hard disk drive earlier in F, then type in F: and press Enter. Because the hard disk is damaged, it usually will appear warning The System Can not Find the Specified Drive.
- This is the key step. Type chkdsk in the command prompt, wait a few seconds until the completion of the hard error detection disknya. Usually fast kog. If his error found, Windows will offer the option to repair it. Select y.

Artificial Intelligence and life beyond the algorithm
Artificial Intelligence and life beyond the algorithm
Alan Turing and the future of computing
Turing is not just a historical figure; his work is still crammed with relevance - and tricky questions.
A statue of Alan Turing at Bletchley Park.
Its hard to choose where Alan Turing had the biggest impact on history. The British mathematician is known as the father of computing thanks to his work on what he called a universal machine - which provided the framework for development of digital computing - and he also helped significantly shorten the Second World War through his work with the codebreakers of Bletchley Park.
But the interest in Turing is not just historical - his work is still relevant to some of the thorniest problems in tech, particularly around artificial intelligence. While a number of other academics and engineers had a role in the creation of digital computing, what sets Turing apart is the breadth of his influence, says S. Barry Cooper a professor of mathematical logic at the University of Leeds.
"He is bringing ideas about computation to different areas and thats whats really significant about Turing - he made all these connections and he had a global over-arching view of how computation worked in many different contexts," he said.
The development of the digital computing upon which we rely was just one element of his thinking. Because even while engineers were struggling over how to turn his theory into physical computers - mechanical giants with glass valves - Turing was already working on even thornier questions, and his work at Bletchley may have helped broaden his outlook, said Cooper, who has co-authored a book on Turing.
"Hes kind of inhabiting a pure mathematical world before going into Bletchley Park and hes forced to engage with real world problems. He comes out the other end and his late work is very much engaged with how the nature of human thinking and the emergence of patterns in nature and so on."
In particular Turings work on artificial intelligence remains relevant and controversial.
"I believe that at the end of the century the use of words and general educated opinion will have altered so much that one will be able to speak of machines thinking without expecting to be contradicted. I believe further that no useful purpose is served by concealing these beliefs," Turing said in his 1950 paper Computing Machinery and Intelligence.
He wasnt right, but the emergence of artificial intelligences whether in the form of Siri or Watson remains a hot area of research. Most famously in this paper Turing outlined The Imitation Game (now the name of a new film about Turing) which he argued could be a method for testing machine intelligence. Its now better known as the Turing Test and while there are a number of variations the basic concept is that a machine that can convince a human of its intelligence should be thought of as a thinking machine.
"The Turing Test has kind of framed peoples thinking. Turing had this knack of focusing on fuzzy problems in kind of rather precise ways. He said well certain questions dont make sense so lets try to pin this down in a practical way," said Cooper.
Turing effectively took a Victorian parlour game and turned it into a piece of modern science. And while the Turing Test has been criticised on a number of levels it also reflects how trying to work out what thinking or intelligent means - and then applying this human concept to machines - is incredibly fraught, and that the appearance of thinking may be the closest we can get.
As Cooper notes: "Maybe there is a theoretical barrier which is being recognised in taking such an approach. Maybe there isnt an algorithm for testing intelligence and in that case what do you have - some kind of empirical approach."
Indeed, while Turings work is responsible for the world of computing which we inhabit, it doesnt necessarily follow that he thought algorithms hold the answer to every question, and we should guard against the assumption that big data can make every decision for us, as Cooper points out. "We have to blame Turing for a lot: the way his work has been interpreted and the primacy of the algorithm these days - and the way in which human thinking has in many ways been marginalised particularly when you are thinking about large organisations."
The computer needs to be kept in context, says Cooper - while it has changed our world and will continue to be important in everything we do, so is the human input which Turing recognises in the Turing Test.
Indeed, Cooper argues that Turings work on artificial intelligence also links up with his work on incomputability - how to solve problems that cannot be solved by using standard digital computing. "Right the way through this 20 year period of discovery hes engaged with not just modelling how we compute but also modelling how we actually transcend what the computer does. Its an amazing body of thinking. This is why he is still significant to us, he was thinking about issues that are still issues for us and in very basic ways that are still valid," he said.
Cooper added: "We havent really got used to the idea that the standard model of computation isnt comprehensive enough to describe whats happening with the internet or whats happening with human thinking or at the quantum level and we are going to have to take that onboard at some point."
He added: "It feels to me that this is Turings revolution in progress now ... its very much part of the way people are thinking about problems now."

Amazon robots and the near future rise of the automated warehouse
Amazon robots and the near future rise of the automated warehouse
How warehouse roles carried out by large numbers of Amazons 220,000 staff are expected to be automated in the coming years.
A human worker in one of Amazons warehouses picks items from shelves brought to him by Kiva robots.
While Amazon employs more than 220,00 people and is growing fast, it is also pursuing technologies that would ultimately allow it to replace many workers in its warehouses worldwide.
Amazons warehouses - known as fulfilment centers - are already partially automated, with a growing number of centers using Kiva robots to carry shelves of products to human workers, who then pick the items to be shipped.
Without automation, Amazon would be unable to ship items to millions of people each day and as the retail giant moves towards its goal of delivering packages within 30 minutes it needs to continue to streamline delivery.
Not only does Amazon plan to use Kiva bots in more of its warehouses but it also wants to automate the process of picking items from shelves. To that end, the firm last year set up the Amazon Picking Challenge (APC), a contest where robotics researchers compete for a $25,000 prize for designing the best picking bot.
The inaugural contest highlighted just how difficult bots find such tasks, with about half of the teams competing failing to score a single point and the bots working far more slowly than humans. A human can sort about 400 items per hour with minimal errors, while the best robot in the APC achieved a rate of about 30 sorts per hour with a 16 percent failure rate. This relatively poor performance occurred despite the robots being given a far simpler challenge than they would face inside an Amazon warehouse, with bots being tasked with picking from a pool of just 25 items, rather than millions, and with only a few items mixed together.
However, looking back at the contest the teams that took part in the first APC are upbeat - forecasting these early issues will be overcome and that warehouse automation is on the cusp of increasing significantly.
"Recent developments in robotics have the potential of substantially increasing the degree of automation in warehouse logistics and order fulfillment in the near future," according to the paper written by key APC team members - including Peter Wurman, the technical co-founder of Amazon-owned Kiva Systems - now Amazon Robotics.
"The kind of warehouse logistics addressed in the APC, however, can believably be automated using existing or near-future technologies and potentially faster than many other target applications of robotics."
But the teams also warn of the need for "substantial scientific progress" before picking can be automated - pointing out that standard approaches to building robotic hands and creating motion planning software are not sufficient to succeed in the APC.
Building a better warehouse worker
Robotics researchers across the world are working on automating warehouse picking, with advances in many areas. Last week, a team of European researchers revealed a system that picks items within 24 seconds - another step closer to the 5 - 10 seconds it takes human workers to pick each item in an Amazon warehouse.
In contrast, in the Amazon Picking Challenge each robot had more than one minute and a half to pick each item. However, the European bot is working in a very different, and arguably simpler, environment than an Amazon warehouse, with the robot transferring cans between pallets, rather than many different-shaped items from packed shelves.
Nevertheless the European gripping arm - which forms part of an autonomous forklift named the Autonomous Picking & Palletizing (APPLE) platform - demonstrates a novel approach to grasping items, one of the difficulties that contestants had in the APC.
APPLE grips items using the tips of its arms two "fingers", which close around the item until sensors in the fingertips tell the bot not to exert any more pressure. Conveyor belts on the fingers then roll the object back into the grasp of the hand. The system, which can work safely alongside humans, gets around the difficulty of precisely calculating to what extent the hand should be closed in order to get a firm grip on an object- overcoming another common difficulty with picking bots.
Robert Krug, of the Sweden-based Centre of Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems, was one of APPLEs programmers, and sees their work as progress toward widespread warehouse automation in the near future.
"Clearly there is a discrepancy with a humans speed but there is a big step up from what we could previously achieve with this kind of system."
Krug anticipates picking systems of the type Amazon is pursuing being introduced to warehouses around the start the next decade.
"I dont know whether the first real commercial system will hit in three or five years but it will happen in the very foreseeable future, Im sure about that."
"The strong interest [in greater warehouse automation] by companies like Amazon shows you the big players think there is something that will happen soon, otherwise they wouldnt put this effort and money into this."
The introduction of automated pickers and other new computerised systems to warehouses will take place gradually - Krug believes - with smaller groups of human workers initially being kept on site to keep the machines on track until they can consistently match or surpass human performance.
"The robot might be able to fulfil its tasks 98 percent of the time, but what do you do about the remaining two percent? One way out is to still have a reduced numbers of humans in the loop. Maybe you could have emergency helpers, who fix tasks when the robot gets stuck."
When asked whether a greater reliance on robots will lead to job losses, Amazon has pointed out that so far its workforce has continued to grow rapidly as it has increased automation.
However, Amazon hasnt explained the commercial benefit of retaining the same number of employees while also running an automated picking system. When asked to comment on the issue for this article, Amazon did not reply.

Applygist Marks the Gobal Hands Across the Sand to promote clean energy

Applygist Support The Above Organization As we Mark the Global Hands Accross the Sands Event
Though we take the Lead role in Organizing this Event In Nigeria, This year this was not Possible due to Logistics. But our Hearts Are in the spirit of the Day.
A Message to the World
Join Hands May 21st, 2016 and say NO to filthy fuels and YES to clean energy. Thank you Sierra Club, Oceana, Greenpeace, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, Friends of the Earth, South Carolina Wildlife Federation, Gulf Restoration Network and Oceana.ÒItÕs the most important thing we can do as human beingsÓ Ð Dave Rauschkolb, founder.
May 21st, 2016 is our 6th anniversary, and extremely timely. We have 83 events for 2016 around the globe!!! Please Attend an event near you. Click on a state or the globe to see where there are events. Scroll down and see the list on any state or country turned dark blue!
A victory! The plan to drill offshore along the entire Atlantic Coast was cancelled for 5 years, yes, just a moratorium. The Gulf of Mexico and the Arctic is STILL OPEN. Still open as well is seismic airgun testing along the Atlantic Coast so that oil companies can obtain data to use when the 5 year moratorium is up. The seismic airguns will search for oil and gas deposits deep below the ocean floor in an area twice the size of California, stretching all the way from Delaware to Florida. This will impact whales, proposes and many other sea creatures.
Meanwhile, Coal plants are being retrofitted and updated, and filthy fuels are being transported by rail around the USA.
On May 21st, 2016 we will join hands in silent solidarity to say NO to the use of filthy fuels on land and in our oceans. ItÕs time to start pulling together your events now! Just click on your state or globe for existing international events and/or begin the process of organizing a 15 minute event near you.
We have all the materials you need. Just click on the RESOURCES link above where you will find all the press materials, posters, banners, talking points, t-shirt example designs for printing by you and many other helpful ideas to create a successful event.
We invite activists to organize HANDS events to:
- protect our communities by protesting the extraction and use of fossil fuels Ñ and instead accelerate the shift to clean, renewable energy.
- Oppose offshore and Arctic drilling, and seismic blasting
- Protesting mountaintop removal, tar sands mining, hydraulic fracturing, and LNG export terminals
- Draw attention to the impact of climate disruption such as rising sea levels, super storms, drought, forest fires, flooding and ocean acidification.
- Reject the KXL and other tar sands pipelines

Thank you May 16th 2015 Hands Heroes!
Our events were in Greece, Belize, Australia, New Zealand, Nigeria, India, Egypt, Canada and 20 States around our nation. Thousands of people joined hands to say NO to offshore drilling plans and yes to figuring out renewable energies.
2015 events were sponsored by Sierra Club; Surfrider; Foundation; Southern Alliance for Clean Energy; Oceana, Friends of the Earth; Center for a Sustainable Coast; and Gulf Restoration Network. Thank you ALL

Hands Across the Sand / Land, founded in 2010, grew into an international movement after the BP oil disaster in April of that year. People came together to join hands, forming symbolic barriers against spilled oil and to stand against the impacts of other forms of extreme energy.
Four years later, as millions begin to understand that President ObamaÕs Climate Action Plan falls short if it fails to address keeping dirty fuels in the ground, thereÕs a rising tide of grassroots activism demanding that we choose a clean energy future over the dangerous and dirty fuels of the 20th century.
The coalition of organizations, activists and citizens around the world bring the message of clean energy to local and world leaders.
We invite activists to organize hundreds of events and Join Hands creating a powerful image to send to our elected officials.
We invite activists to call for the President maintain his rejection of the KXL and other tar sands pipelines and call on local and state leaders to protect our communities by rejecting projects that expand the extraction and use of fossil fuels Ñ and instead accelerate the shift to clean, renewable energy.
In addition, these events will highlight urgent national and regional issues including:
- opposing coastal, offshore and Arctic drilling, and seismic blasting off the East Coast
- protesting mountaintop removal, tar sands mining, hydraulic fracturing, and LNG export terminals

A little insight on how to build the firmware quickly
A little insight on how to build the firmware quickly
I have a 6 Core AMD-FX6300 Desktop with CentOS installed.
All the OpenWrt buildroot dependencies and Java Runtime (OpenJRE) are already installed.
My Repository is maintained via patches which patch cleanly on top of fresh Barrier Breaker.
All the Package Source (ie. Linux Kernel.tar.xz etc) is cached in 1 directory so I dont need to download any other stuff.
Step 1 liner:
git clone git://git.openwrt.org/14.07/openwrt.git && git clone https://github.com/gwlim/mips74k-barrier-breaker-patch.git temp;
mv temp/* openwrt/; rm -rf temp &&cd openwrt./bb_openwrt.sh
Step 2 liner:Symlink the Package Source as a dl folder in the buildroot
(It is like the UNIX way of creating a shortcut in Windows so the OpenWrt buildroot can find the Packages)
Step 3:
Go grab a cup of coffee while the buildroot patches itself
Step 4:
make menuconfigand choose the target platform like WR1043ND etc in the menuStep 5:
make -j 4This will build the firmware in parallel processesStep 6:
Go grab another cup of coffee while the buildroot builds your firmware
Step 7:
After I am done I just take the binaries and nuke the buildroot with a
rm -rf ./openwrtEvery build is a fresh build it is not design to last!If you do this correctly, you can easily build from source a fully optimized firmware for your Router in less than 1 hour!
The patches keeps tracks of the all changes, it is designed to fail if upstream makes changes which conflicts with existing patches.
This will free up my brain space on remembering all the various changes I made
Also it will prevent conflict with upstream repository
Lastly it will make porting to the next release (Chaos Calmer) much easier as all the changes are recorded with most changes just minor line changes, renaming and shifting around.
